Prototyping and development of an IoT solution

The Client

The client (under NDA) is a global manufacturer and supplier of access control products. The company provides its users with secure and controlled admittance to urban and industrial properties.

  • Industry:

    Mechanical or Industrial Engineering

  • Location:

    Belgium

Value delivered by N-iX

  • Developed an embedded hardware and software solution: from idea to production
  • Created communication between devices by only using the two existing wires
  • Started the development of a next version of the system based on new technologies

The Challenge

Our client needed to design and develop an efficient and secure access control system for fences and gates. We took care of the prototype design, firmware development, hardware development, and server-side application development. Also, our team has been responsible for developing technical documentation for the project.

The Solution

The client provided us with a high-level vision, and our team helped to define all the required details of the future Product. To help the client define specific requirements, we started our cooperation with the discovery phase (DP). As a result of the DP, we clarified all the necessary details, created a backlog, and helped to choose the most appropriate tech stack and hardware.
The system consists of three devices: the keyboard, the relay box, and the gateway. We used the power line communication (PLC) to send data over existing power cables. Each device includes a PLC modem that is based on narrowband OFDM technology. This technology has communication speed limitations that affect how communication is designed.
Also, we started developing a brand-new access control system — an innovative home sensor network based on newer technologies. Our team has built a prototype to manage the access control system from the cloud using AWS IoT.

IoT fleet management solution

The Client

Our client (under NDA) is an international company that offers smart telematics solutions for efficient fleet operation and management. It specializes in enterprise-level remote encryptor management solutions.

  • Industry:

    Logistics and supply chain

  • Location:

    Belgium

  • Partnership period

    August 2021 - ongoing

Value delivered by N-iX

  • N-iX experts have helped the client develop reliable solutions to ensure smart fleet monitoring, operational efficiency, safety, and effective maintenance.
  • Our experts contributed to the development of an OEM-based Linux connectivity gateway that ensures easy and efficient monitoring and management of vehicle activities.

Our team has largely contributed to the development of an Android app for rugged tablets, allowing the driver to manage all services. We have also helped the client to сonsolidate other peripherals and sensors.

Implementation of a Digital experience platform

The Client

Our client is one of the leading companies in the telecom market in Saudi Arabia.

  • Industry:

    Telecom

  • Location:

    Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Value delivered by N-iX

The product is still in an active development phase, but so far, we have:

  • Successfully conducted the Discovery phase, helping our client finalize the future solution's architecture.
  • Provided a dedicated team for the project implementation from scratch.
  • Created a Unified Digital experience platform that keeps everything in one place and facilitates the work of internal users and customers of our client.

The Challenge

The client needed to implement a unified Digital experience platform (DXP) — a complex multifaceted platform for interaction, communication, and everyday operations. The platform consists of Employee and Customer portals and needs to have 3rd party integrations used currently by the customer.

The Solution

Due to the complex requirements, a large number of external integrations, and client's expectations about the business logic, the platform had to be highly configurable to allow the company to change business processes dynamically. To verify the concept of the platform, plan all the necessary integrations, and verify the use of specific tools, we built the PoC and then kicked off the engineering process. The newly developed platform will face both internal users and our client's customers and give them multifaceted portals for interaction, communication, and everyday operational needs. We have completed the development of the Customer portal functionality related to registration, user profile, and several other features. Or engineers are currently working on registration, billing, and order management functionality. As for the Employee portal, we've added a profile, integration with Teams and OneDrive, and have been working on integrations.

Digital transformation of manual processes

The Client

Our client (under NDA) is one of the leading UK car dealerships that represents some of the most prestigious car manufacturers around the globe. The company distributes new and used cars as well as after-sales services.

  • Industry:

    Automotive

  • Location:

    UK

Value delivered by N-iX

  • automated document administration, saving around 5% of total warranty claims reimbursements;
  • increased effectiveness of warranty processing, reducing reworks and unneeded clarifications;
  • enabled documentation routing to a fully-controlled central hub.

The Challenge

The client required custom development to digitize the car maintenance and warranty management processes. The paperwork went from the technician to the workshop controller and warranty administrator. This process was tedious and presented a challenge, as it was:

  • Time and cost consuming.
  • Labor-intensive.
  • Manual.

The Solution

We held a 2-week Discovery phase to evaluate the business impact of the solution. The team performed an in-depth gap analysis of the existing system and designed a business and technical vision for the new system. We designed and developed a warranty tool that allows the client to simplify the process of passing the write-up through the chain of users. The system is ready for customization within any corporation department and can be scaled to multiple partners. Now, mechanics can fill in all the information, such as a unique case number, the detailed description of the issue, its diagnostics, what has been done, etc.
The tool makes the warranty process more effective and reduces a substantial amount of time and costs.

Solution development for financial regulation compliance

The Client

The client (under NDA) is one of the leading UK digital challengers to banks. The company offers a new take on banking services for entrepreneurs, independent businesses, and consumers that power the UK economy. Early in 2021, the client also launched their own neobank.

  • Industry:

    Fintech, Banking

  • Location:

    UK

Value delivered by N-iX

  • Our team led the Open Banking implementation – one of the mandatory steps for financial institutions.

The Challenge

Fintech is one of the most regulated industries, where companies need to adhere to multiple regulations, standards, and compliances. As a provider of financial technology services, our client was obliged to implement an Open Banking API. Open Banking (OB) is a set of protocols that allows external providers to communicate with an online banking system and build software products around them.

The Solution

Our team has led the implementation of Open Banking API and the development of a customer authentication solution. As a part of this project, we:

  1. Integrated OB components with the existing tech architecture and ecosystem,
  2. Developed an API according to the tech specifications and made it available for third-party providers,
  3. Monitored API performance to ensure it was running smoothly.

We used the FIS Payment Gateway, which enabled fast card authorization forwarding, accurate settlement file submission, secure data hosting, and instant financial reporting. We managed all card payment and refund transactions from all multi-channel points of sale through the PCI DSS accredited data centers.

Scaling digital transformation in automotive

  • Proven workflow processes and KPIs to use for solution/service benchmarking. We have defined what types of solutions and services would bring more profit.
  • The benchmarking solution integrates all available vehicle benchmarks, replacing nearly two weeks of manual work and providing additional flexibility.
  • Public portal for the client, where the user can view offered benchmarks, request them, and get additional information.
  • Our engineers worked on several other projects for this client.

The Challenge

Our client has a lot of manual processes, which they have to automate in-house. The company has a complex organizational structure and numerous independent departments. They needed a SaaS platform that would standardize and streamline digital products of different departments and reduce costs. However, the company needed a clear vision of the business perspective and validation of the product idea.

The Solution

To understand the platform's profitability and plan our work properly, we held two Discovery Phases (DP) — the technical DP focused on the product, and a business strategy DP concentrated on its business value. Based on the results of both discovery phases, the client decided to build the SaaS platform. Therefore, we started the development of the unique marketplace for available vehicle benchmarks (drivability, emission, etc.) from scratch. The benchmarking solution hosted on a SaaS platform integrates all available vehicle benchmarks previously researched by the client. Our team took full responsibility for the product development — from DP to the knowledge transfer after successful MVP delivery, including microservices architecture design, setting up the DevOps pipeline, and conducting a deep UX research to ensure the design fits the end-user needs.

Our client is a global Tier 1 supplier with 500+ warehouses around the globe. The company offers innovative solutions for Industry 4.0, manufacturing sites, and clients around the world.

  • Industry:

    Healthcare

  • Location:

    Mechanical & Industrial Engineering

Value delivered by N-iX

  • Automated manual work and reduced paperwork for warehouse personnel;
  • Streamlined inventory management for 700+ warehouses worldwide;
  • Created a multiplatform mobile application designed for warehouse operators with custom neural networks, label detections, data recognition, and data processing;
  • Developed embedded Computer Vision that allows managing and tracking the goods in a non-touch way.

The Challenge

The client had a legacy logistics platform that could not be scaled properly and did not fully meet the company's expectations.. Although the client wanted to refactor the legacy platform, they did not have the comprehensive in-house expertise to address migration to microservices and redevelopment of the computer vision solution. The client engaged the N-iX team to redevelop the logistics platform using AI and scale it globally.

The Solution

The N-iX team works on a complex logistics management system with ERP, big data, IoT, and AI. We also created a multiplatform mobile application with Computer Vision, OCR, and NLP for document processing. Our teams have redeveloped the legacy platform and introduced cloud-native infrastructure and microservice architecture. We have also developed and automated deep machine learning. The solution allows the client to manage and track the goods in a non-touch way and has the following features:

  • Pallet detection;
  • Label recognition;
  • Box counting;
  • Damage detection;
  • Fuzzy information matching

Modernization of an ecommerce application

The Client

Value delivered by N-iX

  • Migrated the desktop app to the web with backend integration. A web-based application is now available across different operating systems, browsers, and mobile devices.
  • Set up CI/CD pipelines

The Challenge

The client had an old desktop app that was available only on Windows. Consequently, users of other OS could not install and use it. Moreover, the app was unavailable to the increasing number of mobile users. The client needed to migrate the app to the web and add several features.

The Solution

The UX design of the legacy application was outdated. We created the entire UX design scope of work, from concept to product.
Additionally, we migrated the old desktop application to the web with its backend integration. To satisfy the clients' needs, we engaged them when validating features to understand which existing features were to be migrated to the web and which ones were outdated and not used anymore.

Routine maintenance and introduction of new features

The Client

Bycyklen is a digital bike-sharing system that provides city bikes for rent in the Danish capital area.

  • Industry:

    Transportation

  • Location:

    Denmark, Copenhagen

  • Partnership period

    January 2018 - present

Value delivered by N-iX

  • Picked up development in under a week.
  • Implemented push notification on the bicycle, that allows us to stay within data package limitations and improve the overall use of devices.
  • Reduced the starting time from 5 seconds to less than a second.
  • Added new significant components and features to the services: push notifications, maps, email services.

The Challenge

The client was acquired by another company, received additional funding, and needed to change vendors on a short notice. They needed us to pick up the routine operations and update their server-side. Also, the company required mobile applications for the clients to use their bicycles.

The Solution

The N-iX team picked up the backend maintenance of the existing applications (an admin website, an end-user website, and a tablet application). We re-engineered the backend architecture to prepare it for scaling, addition of new features, and handling communication with mobile applications.
Next, our engineers came up with a 'silver bullet,' a prototype that proved to be successful and served as a foundation for new mobile applications (Android and iOS) for the existing bikes and new generation bikes (which can be operated entirely with a new mobile app).
Also, the team performed integration with payment systems, Open Street maps, SMS providers, email providers, and train providers. We have also added data analytics to the services.

System redesign to tackle tech challenges

The Client

Our client is an industry leader in production of mesh radio alarm communication ecosystems. The company's products are nationally recognized for safety and sustainability standards.

  • Industry:

    Generation, Utilities, and Energy

  • Location:

    USA

Value delivered by N-iX

  • Conducted a technical audit, analysis, and estimation of the team composition and development roadmap for the migration.
  • Developed the solution for Linux-based devices, reducing the number of reported issue cases.
  • Simplified the delivery to production and overall operational flows.
  • Developed the solution for subscribers, reducing the number of reported issues by 92% and increasing customer satisfaction.

The Challenge

The company engaged the N-iX team to tackle the problem faced by a number of end-users: the devices stopped working under certain conditions. The root cause was difficult to reproduce. Therefore, the client needed experts who could find the problem and fix it quickly.

The Solution

The N-iX team completed reverse engineering, identified, and localized the problem, which had not been fixed for three years. We also needed to re-architect the system to reduce the number of embedded software components and move the logic to the standard managed software services. We built the test automation framework from scratch to accelerate time-to-market and automated 75% of subscribers' manual regression test plans.
After successful delivery on the first part of the project, our specialists started working on another client's product. We began to build the next generation of the MultiNet receiver on a virtual machine from scratch. Our team created new features and provided constant maintenance. In particular, the N-iX team added real-time log monitoring with Web UI.
Our team expanded the functionality of two mesh radio alarm communication products developed for enhanced monitoring.
